Over the centuries, Grumento Nova underwent various dominations, including Byzantine, Lombard, Norman, Swabian and Angevin. During the medieval period, the country was involved in numerous conflicts between the different powers that vied for control of southern Italy.
One of the most significant events in Grumento Nova’s history was the construction of the Caracciolo Castle in the 14th century. This imposing castle, located on a hill overlooking the town, was an important point of defense during the conflicts that characterized the era.
